Cuban-inspired pork + rice bowl on the menu
Team Red (Manager Gwen Coley of George Watts Elementary and Chef Roberto Copa Matos of COPA) created a delicious recipe that student judges named “Best idea for new school food.” Their Durham Bowl hit DPS menus on January 24th, 2019, and the News & Observer joined us to see how it went.
Durham Bowls in Schools
Durham Bowls are debuting on DPS menus across all 50+ schools. Each month from December 2018 — April 2019, one new dish will be offered as part of the regular lunch menu. On December 6th, 2018, ABC11 joined Team Dark Blue at Club Boulevard Elementary to see how kids and teachers alike enjoyed their sweet potato, kale and mozzarella flatbread.
Durham Bowls 2018 Launch Event
On April 16, 2018, 10 school nutrition professionals and 10 chefs met for the first time at The Durham Hotel. They were randomly assigned to teams of two and shared lunch while getting to know each other. The News & Observer was there to cover the story.
